NorthEast India Feb 2025: Day 7
5am departure for Elephant Safari.
The animals we saw:
Rhino (lots)
Jungle Fowl (the female walking behind is very well camouflaged)
Siberian crane
All 4 of us in the group (just parts of!) are visible in this photo!
Back for a quick breakfast and then departed for the jeep safari at 8.30am
Went in quite a long way but we weren’t lucky enough to spot a tiger (which people had seen the previous day).
Overall we had better close-up photos of rhinos on the elephant safari but the jeep safari in needed to have any chance of spotting a tiger.
The animals we saw were:
Deer and Wild boar and then together
Kingfisher
Rhinos (many more than shown here)
Siberian Crane
Turtles / tortoises
BUT... no tigers!
This park is on the flat plains of the Brahmaputra and flood waters can rise high during the rainy season. As indicated on this building which shows 2023 level and only 2 earlier years higher than that.
Departed 11.30 for Tezpur.
On the way we went for the 1-hour Dolphin Boat cruise on the mighty Brahmaputra river.
There was twice when black specks were pointed out in the distance as dolphins but I never caught sight of any. The boatman showed a video on his phone where it could be paused to see a grainy dolphin for 1 second.
I was disappointed as we are used to seeing schools(?) of dolphins elsewhere eg off South Island, Cape Town, Seattle. Admittedly all those were in the sea and not a river…
To the hotel to take rest and then in the evening we walked to the nearby Maha Bhairabab Sivan temple. => link
Being Siva Raatri there was a real festive atmosphere with lots of well-dressed ladies.
Huge crowd but the gents’ crowd was less and all 4 of us went to that side.
There was a really huge (3ft high 1ft diameter?) decorated Lingam in the main sanctum which we were able to get close to and touch. Lots of flowers and garlands but granite still visible. No photos. But some can be seen in the link above.
Walked back to hotel and dined separately as my sore throat was showing up.

Didn't know dolphins can be spotted in a river.
